A Decade of Design: One Hundred Stars Turns 10
This year, we’re celebrating 10 years of One Hundred Stars! A journey that began around a kitchen table in Sheffield and grew into something we never could have imagined.
What started as a family-run venture quickly evolved into a brand known for its signature prints, timeless silhouettes, and sustainable approach. "One Hundred Stars started as a family venture inspired by our shared love of textiles, travel, and timeless design." One day around the kitchen table, "we dreamt of creating beautiful, ethical clothing that tells a story. With each of us bringing a different skillset, we built a brand rooted in creativity, sustainability, and care. These values still guide every piece we design today."
In the early days, we created scarves printed with vintage maps, adding motifs and colour combinations that felt fresh and unexpected. "We got quite good at that, and we ended up selling them to lots of independent shops up and down the country. So, people like the National Gallery were buying our London map scarf."
The turning point came in 2017 when Nigella Lawson wore our Venice print dressing gown on her BBC2 series At My Table. It became a sensation overnight. "Everybody wanted the dressing gown she was wearing while making cheeky brownies!"
Since then, our pieces have appeared in Mamma Mia 1 & 2, and have been worn by Julie Walters, Whoopi Goldberg, Florence Pugh, Emma Bunton, Grace Dent and more...
But even with those moments, it’s always been about the design process itself; The spark, the story, and the care in how we bring it to life. "Our creative process always begins with inspiration which is often found in the pages of antique books, vintage maps, botanical illustrations, or treasures from our collaborations with iconic institutions like the V&A or Kew Gardens. Once we find a motif or story that resonates, we start reimagining it in a way that feels fresh and wearable."
"From there, our design team carefully curates colour palettes, experiments with layout, and selects the most flattering silhouettes to bring the print to life. Every detail is considered, from the drape of the fabric to how a print moves with the body. We work closely with our artisan partners to ensure quality and ethical production every step of the way. It’s a hands-on process that blends creativity, heritage, and heart."
And as for what inspires the stories we tell through our prints, we've touched on this above, but yes! "Inspiration comes from the old and the beautiful, whether it’s an antique botanical study or a forgotten detail in a vintage map. It always starts with something that sparks curiosity."
Today, One Hundred Stars is proud to be stocked in over 600 boutiques across the UK, Europe and the US. Our team has grown, but the essence of what we do remains the same. From those first map-print scarves to the gowns, kimonos, tops, and jackets worn around the world. Every piece is made with intention, from AZO-free dyes and sustainable fibres, to off-cut headbands and free-sized fits that feel as good as they look.
Here’s to 10 years of storytelling through design and to all of you who’ve been part of the journey.
